Police Department Deploys Speed Traffic Radar Trailer as Educational Tool

The Plymouth Police Department has two Speed Monitoring Awareness Radar Trailers, (S.M.A.R.T.).

Drivers approaching a speed radar trailer will see the posted speed limit displayed, as well as their speed as detected by the radar gun within the trailer. The trailer will also record the total number of vehicles and their average speeds during the times it is monitoring traffic.

The Plymouth Police Department will be placing the speed radar trailers in various locations throughout the Town of Plymouth, depending on such variables as previous history of motor vehicle accidents, requests from the public and frequent speeding citations.

The use of a speed radar trailer aids in educating the public, especially the driver who may be unaware exactly how fast they are going. While traffic enforcement through visible patrols and traffic citations remains an important component of our overall traffic safety strategy, the use of our new speed radar trailer bolsters our efforts to reduce speeding through education.

Residents who would like the speed radar trailer placed in their neighborhoods are invited to make a request by calling the department’s Radar / Speed Trailer line at 508-830-4218, ext. 300.
